Cefepime-induced encephalopathy with triphasic waves in three Asian patients.

چکیده
Dear Editor, Cefasporins such as cefepime are beta-lactam antibiotics with a broad antimicrobial spectrum. They are commonly used as first-line agents in the treatment of many infections.1 Reversible encephalopathy is a known neurotoxic complication of cefalosporins.2 Previous case reports have documented triphasic waves on electroencephalography (EEG) in cephalosporin-induced encephalopathy.1-4 Cefalosporin-induced encephalopathy with triphasic waves has not been previously reported among Asians. We report 3 Asian patients with toxic encephalopathy and documented triphasic waves on EEG while on treatment with cefepime.

Cefepime induced neurotoxicity: A case series and review of the literature
Cefepime is a fourth generation cephalosporin which is bactericidal for broad spectrum of organisms. This is a case-series of three patients who presented to our hospital with confusion secondary to cefepime use to treat urinary tract infection (UTI) and health care associated pneumonia (HCAP), after excluding other common etiologies of altered mental status (AMS). Of these three patients, one ...
متن کاملEEG with triphasic waves in Borrelia burgdorferi meningoencephalitis.
We describe a case of encephalopathy in which the clinical picture and triphasic waves in the EEG indicated a metabolic cause. However, the illness was caused by neuroborreliosis. The occurrence of triphasic waves in the EEG is a strong evidence of metabolic encephalopathy, but triphasic waves are not specific for metabolic encephalopathy. Triphasic waves have been described in a number of non-...
متن کاملLevetiracetam accumulation in renal failure causing myoclonic encephalopathy with triphasic waves
Triphasic waves are seen in the electro-encephalogram of adult patients with toxic-metabolic encephalopathies of various origins. Levetiracetam is a broad spectrum anti-epileptic drug with renal elimination and no hepatic metabolism. We describe the case of encephalopathy with triphasic waves concomitant with levetiracetam accumulation in a patient with chronic renal failure. The condition was ...
متن کامل[EEG manifestations in metabolic encephalopathy].
Normal brain function depends on normal neuronal metabolism, which is closely related to systemic homeostasis of metabolites, such as glucose, electrolytes, amino acids and ammonia. "Metabolic encephalopathy" indicates diffuse brain dysfunction caused by various systemic derangements. Electroencephalogram (EEG) is widely used to evaluate metabolic encephalopathy since 1937, when Berger first ob...
متن کاملCefepime-Induced Non-Convulsive Status Epilepticus in a Patient with Normal Renal Function
Cefepime-induced encephalopathy including nonconvulsive status epilepticus has been known to develop in the patients with renal impairment. However, we report a 74-year-old woman with normal renal function who developed stuporous mental status during cefepime administration. Electroencephalogram (EEG) revealed 2 Hz rhythmic sharp-and-waves continuously, which suggested nonconvulsive status epil...
